UFC Superfights

A Superfight consists of 2 champions that are seemingly unbeatable to pick a weight and fight each other. Two of them are Silva VS Jones and GSP VS Silva. The two fights the fans want to see. Sadly, I don’t think any will ever happen. Superfights are constantly brought up and nothing comes of it. I personally don’t think we should have any UFC Superfights and I doubt the UFC wants them either. When you have a Superfight, both fighters will enter the octagon with their ticket selling”mystique” and one will leave without it. Everytime the losing fighter has a match afterward, fans will ALWAYS say “Remember when Fighter A got KOed by Fighter B with ‘Insert Technique'”. Regardless of the above, here are my  two Superfight Breakdowns!

GSP VS Silva

Pierre’s takedowns would not be nearly as effective because Silva has a large reach, height and weight advantage here. Stuffing the takedown would be much easier for Silva then Georges’ previous opponents, though I’d think some would get through. I would really like to see how the striking match goes with these two technical strikers.

The Middleweight Division has very weak striking in comparison to the other divisions. Just looking at striking alone, lets review their respective opponents since 2006.

Anderson Silva – Leben,Franklin,Marquardt,Henderson,Irvin,Cote,Leites,Griffin,Maia,Sonnen,Belfort,Okami,Bonnar

All either have a ground base with limited striking or are brawlers.

Georges St. Pierre – Penn,Hughes,Serra,Koscheck,Fitch,Alves,Hardy,Shields,Condit

Penn,Alves and Condit are decorated strikers and everyone else is mainly ground based. Koscheck is in the middle and Hardy never belonged in the title picture.

Anderson Silva fights mostly Brawlers who try to stand with him or wrestlers who cant capitalize on the takedown.  GSP fights some pretty good strikers and outwrestles everyone with what seems like ease.

I’d say that Anderson Silva probably takes this in the end, but I have no idea how he’d handle a very technical and well rounded martial artist in GSP. That right there sells the tickets for this Superfight.

Jones VS Silva

This is the fight that everyone wants to see. Would Jones dominate Silva to a (T)KO victory or will the precision of Anderson catch Jon off guard?

Jon Jones has faced MUCH better competition than Anderson. Lets overview all his UFC fights before he became champion.

Gusmao,Bonnar,O’Brien,Hamill,Vera,Matyushenko,Bader,Shogun

He beat the above with little to no trouble from anyone but Bonnar using his striking and wrestling. Bonnar is the only one on the list that was not finished. Jones beat Shogun for the title and became both the first one to finish Mauricio via strikes and the youngest UFC Champion.

Now, Let’s look at the Jon Jones, The UFC Champion.

Jackson,Machida,Evans,Belfort

3 were top contenders, 3 were finished. Jackson was tapped,Machida was choked out, Evans turtled for the last 3 rounds and Belfort was submitted.

Though he finished Machida and Belfort, It showed holes in both his striking and top game which he has probably sealed by now. He fights Chael Sonnen for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title next. I don’t see Sonnen giving him any trouble because he is better in all areas. Sonnen can definitely talk the talk but doesnt seem to walk the walk when the time comes.

In the end, I’d give a small edge to  Jones. Anderson has a problem with strong wrestling bases. He always overcomes it and finishes the fight but  nobody in MMA has a more vicious top game than Jon “Bones” Jones.
